Tips for success:

Grate the butter with a cheese grater into small slivers.

Use very Cold unsalted butter

Brush lightly with an egg wash or milk before baking for golden scones

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 F and place a rack in the middle. Prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper as well and set aside.
  2. In a medium bowl whisk the dry ingredients; the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cloves, all spice, and salt.
  3. Next, use a cheese grater to grate the cold butter into the flour mixture from step 2.
  4. Use your fingers, a pastry blender, two forks, or a couple knives to create pea sized chunks of butter covered in the flour mixture.
  5. In another medium bowl prepare the wet ingredients. Whisk the pumpkin puree, vanilla, brown sugar, egg, and buttermilk until smooth. Pour over the dry mixture and use your hands or a rubber spatula to combine until a ball comes together.
  6. Next, lightly flour a working surface and place the ball of dough onto it. Make a circle with your dough about 6inch in diameter and use a knife to make 8 equal wedges.
  7. Place the wedges on your baking sheet and brush on an egg wash or extra buttermilk with the back of a spoon.
  8. Bake for 20-22 minutes.
  9. Let cool and enjoy!
